The Muttart Conservatory is a unique botanic display garden that brings together a collection of plants from a diverse range of climatic conditions. The structure was designed in the early 70's by Edmonton architect, Peter Hemingway. The pyramid shape is static and non-directional, providing stark contrast to its natural setting in the River Valley and the softness of the living world within. The Conservatory features four display pyramids and a small skylight located over the Centre Court area, Each pyramid maintains unique enviromental conditions to meet the needs of the plants housed within. Centre Court area is 1319 square metres (14,200 square feet). It houses the admissions area, gift shop, Gourmet Goodies Cafe, art gallery and administration offices, and provides circulation between the four display pyramids. A mural, painted by well-known native artist, Alex Janvier, encircles the perimeter of this central area.
